Did you know there are 15 beautiful murals spread across the SFSU campus, commemorating the cultural and ethnic diversity of our community? Did you know San Francisco is one of the three cities in the United States, including Los Angeles and Chicago, with the greatest number of murals painted since the 1930s by famous artists, such as Diego Rivera, to convey major social, political, and economic issues? Students in the Ethnographic Research Methods course (ANTH 651) in Fall 2010 conducted exploratory fieldwork in the SF Bay Area to map and document local murals. The information they produced helped muralists Eduardo Pineda and Joaquin Newman design the 'Right to Good Health' mural at the Mission Neighborhood Health Center (240 Shotwell Street, San Francisco, CA 94110). The official unveiling of the mural took place in the Spring of 2011, as part of the 8th Annual SFSU Human Rights Summit on “Peace and the Right to Good Health” (organized by Prof. Mariana Ferreira & funded by the National Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health.
