Advising in American & California Studies

Please Note: During this period of remote instruction in response to COVID-19, academic advising remains available via email, phone, and Zoom. Reach out to us for continued support!

Majors in the College of Liberal & Creative Arts (LCA) should consult with two advisers each semester: (1) an adviser in the major and (2) a general education and university requirements adviser in the ARC (Advising Resource Center for LCA). Students who are completing a minor or an additional major should see an adviser in those programs as well.

Advising in American Studies (B.A. and minor) and California Studies (minor)

For advising in American Studies or California Studies, see Cristina Ruotolo (ruotolo@sfsu.edu).

You may sign up as a major or minor via your Student Center.

Before you meet with the adviser, please download and study the advising worksheet (which can be found on the Advising Forms webpage) and fill out as much as you can, using your unofficial transcript as needed. The advisor will help you develop your list of electives, reviewing what you have already taken and helping you plan what to take going forward.

Get SF State unofficial transcripts from the Student Center link via SF State Gateway. We've found that using Firefox works best when downloading materials from Campus Solutions. (NOTE: the unofficial transcript link at MySFSU takes you to the older version of transcripts that doesn't go beyond Spring 2014.)

Finally, take a look at your Degree Progress Report (DPR) and take note of any red boxes in the section devoted to your major/minor. There will likely be errors on it, which the advisor can help sort out. Given the degree to which the American Studies major is self-designed, you will need to have the advisor enter your electives list.
